Vernon Burton

June 3, 1924 — January 22, 2015

Vern, who was known for his wonderful sense of humor and ever present smile, was born in Omaha, Nebraska on June 3, 1924 and was the only child of John and Vesta Burton. He passed away peacefully on January 22, 2015. His early years were spent in Nebraska, Minnesota and Illinois before the family settled in the Los Angeles area of California when he was a freshman in High School. In July 1943, fresh out of high school, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and sent to Camp Adair, Oregon to a new wartime infantry division - the 7th Infantry "Trailblazer" Division. Vern fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was discharged in April, 1946 at the rank of Tech-Sgt.

He married Charlotte McKnight and they were married for over 66 years. He earned a BS in Entomology from U.C. Berkeley and a Masters from LSU. Vern spent his career with the Agricultural Extension branch of the University of California. The first ten years were spent as an Entomology Farm Advisor in Bakersfield followed by 28 years at U.C. Davis as an Entomologist Specialist.

Vern was a lifetime member of Kiwanis International and an active member of the Davis Kiwanis Club. While he was an avid golfer, he also loved playing bridge, family board games and reading, but mostly cherished spending time with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Vesta and John Burton and his wife Charlotte Burton. He is survived by his daughters Maryn Mason (Bill) and Anice Isaacs (Bob), and granddaughters Kimberly Mason, Audra Anderson (Kory), Rebecca Mason, Ashley Nolan (Bowie).

The family would like to give a special Thank You to Dr. Hackman at Sutter Davis Hospital for his wonderful care and to Yolo Hospice, especially Nurse Ted for his loving gentle care of our father/grandfather.
