Timothy Prout

June 14, 1923 — January 5, 2009

A 34 year resident of Davis, Timothy Prout passed away peacefully at his home on January 5 after a short illness. He was 85. Timothy was born in Waterbury Connecticut to Curtis Prout and Edith MacPhail Prout on June 14 1923 and grew up in Summit, New Jersey. During the second world war he served in Italy as a member of the 10th Mountain Division. After receiving a PhD from Columbia University in Zoology in 1954, he and his wife, Marjorie Lester of Leonia, New Jersey, traveled to California where he became a faculty member of the recently opened University of California at Riverside. Timothy spent 20 years in Riverside, before moving to Davis to join the Genetics and Evolution faculty at University of California Davis where he spent the remainder of his career. He was well liked and respected by his many students. He spent several sabbatical years at Aarhus University in Denmark which became a second academic home, and from which he received an honorary doctorate degree in 1997. Timothy remained active in research and was publishing papers well past his official retirement. Timothy gained immense joy from nature; whether he was trout fishing, skiing or backpacking with his family, or doing research on his beloved Drosophila.

Timothy is survived by Marjorie Prout, his wife of 58 years, two children, Mary Prout and David Prout, and two grandchildren, Ellen Slatkin and Eric Hu.

We would like to thank the Yolo Hospice and "Comfort Keepers" for their support.
