Susan Hare Youmans, a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted member of the Davis, California community, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, at the age of 74.
Born on April 8, 1951, in Edenton, North Carolina, Susan was the daughter of Leonard Sylvester Hare and Annie Martha Spruill Hare. She carried the core values of her North Carolina upbringing—warmth, strength, and integrity—throughout her life, shaping everything she did.
Susan’s life was highlighted by deep love, civic commitment, and an enduring passion for beauty in all its forms. Together with her husband, Reed Youmans, she left an indelible mark on the city of Davis through years of service, leadership, and philanthropy. In 2016, Susan and Reed were honored with the Covell Award as Davis Citizens of the Year in recognition of their shared dedication to the community. They were also enthusiastic supporters of education, including programs at the Robert Mondavi Institute at UC Davis.
Susan found joy in music, art, travel, and gardening. Whether playing the piano, tending to her flowers, attending local art events, or exploring new corners of the world, she brought creativity, curiosity, and grace to each endeavor. Her generous spirit and radiant presence enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Susan is survived by her beloved husband, Reed Youmans; daughter, Billie Doyle (Ed); sons, Brady Hudson and Lawson Youmans; and sisters, Nancy Vincek and Wendy Batten. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren—Bailey, Conner, and Alyssa Doyle; Tyler and Emma Hudson—and great-granddaughter, Annabelle Doyle. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Annie Martha Hare.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis, California, on June 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Paul’s Place, 1111 H St. Davis, CA 95616 in honor of Susan’s lifelong commitment to community, beauty, and kindness.
Susan will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, unwavering convictions, and the deep love she shared with her family and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
