Spike Smith

It is with great sorrow and sadness that Smith Funeral Home announces the passing of our comfort dog, Spike.

Spike was born in June 2012 and came to Vera as a rescue August 27, 2013, although we all know who really rescued who.  His amazing personality allowed him to become a comfort dog, where he gave many people a small ray of sunshine in a very difficult time.  He was often described as an "old soul".

Spike was a great companion who brought smiles, joy and comfort to all he met, whether it be at the funeral home, on his daily walks through the arboretum or around town and to the many businesses in Davis who kept dog treats (he knew EVERY location).  He never met a person he didn't like, or who didn't like him.  In fact, even "non-dog" people came to love and adore him.  How could they not with that scruffy fur, big brown eyes and bright smile?!

In honor of Spike's memory, please perform at least one act of kindness to another person.  Help put a smile on thier face, just as Spike did for so many others.

I love Spike! I love that, when beginning and ending your walks, he would always look to our house, waiting for Tucker to come out. I love that when they would see each other on their walks they would run at each other, around each other, and then stop and start sniffing the grass. They had a chummy rapport and I don't recall ever a time they barked or nipped at each other. Spike is such a love and will be deeply missed by our family. Love and prayers to you, Vera.

Spike was one of the most amazing dogs I ever had a relationship with. I loved him sooooooo very much and he returned that love ten fold. He had the best "swagger" for a dog. I have missed him every week for the past 18 months. I'm so sorry for you loss Vera. I know how much you loved each other. The rainbow bridge got a great one.

The last time I was with Spike, we were sitting on the stairs together as a family was saying their last farewells in the Chapel. We were comforting each other as he was missing Vera while she was caring for her parents and I was dreading those stairs! By the end of the service I literally crawled up the stairs with Spike right next to me and he stayed with me until I could grab an ice pack for my back and curl up on the couch.
Thanks for the love, support and commiseration in our pain together Spike.
I'll never forget the fun times either; the silly smiles or even the looks of disgust that occasionally crossed your face.
Vera, I know Spike was your special angel on earth and my heart goes out to you. May God bring you peace in your grief my friend.
Love you, Anna

I never got to meet Spike in person, but I loved hearing about his adventures. Wishing peace and fold memories to all who loved him.

This was a unique and special little dog. I witnessed his "touch" with people in grief, and while I don't understand it Spike had a calming presence. My heart breaks for Vera's loss.

So so sorry for your loss. Spike was such a handsome boy and I followed him on Facebook. He will definitely be missed by many. Loved following you spike.

Spike was not just a canine. He was a human in a dog body. Spike was 1 of only a few dogs that I truly loved. I loved all the posts about his adventures, random item of the day turned into a toy. His smile was THE best! Vera, I'm glad that he was yours. You two had a great relationship and you loved him so much. Sending hugs and my deepest condolences. Love you both!
