Robert Haight

Robert Samuel (Bob) Haight, 99, of Davis, Ca., passed away Saturday February 23, 2019 at the University Retirement Center. Bob was born on July 15, 1919 in Wichita, Ks. He was the son of the late Herbert and Alta (Samuel) Haight.

Bob grew up in Kansas, Florida and Michigan, graduating from Perry High School, Michigan, in 1939.  He then moved to California and attended business school and worked at Gladding, McBean, a ceramics company in Glendale, California.  On March 20, 1941, Bob joined the US Army and trained as a radio operator.  After the United States entered World War 2 in December 1941 Bob was sent to Europe and fought in France, Germany and Italy.  After the war he was honorably discharged on August 14, 1945 and returned to Glendale. Only a few short weeks after his return to Glendale he met Hazel C. Buell and a month later on Sept 21, 1945, they were wed.

Bob worked for TransWorld Airlines (TWA) covering the California-Arizona area for several years before moving, in 1950, to Davis Ca. to work at the University of California, Davis (UCD).  He remained at UCD until his retirement in 1979.

Bob was a Ham Radio enthusiast (K6JGW) and regularly talked with fellow Ham operators around the country.  He enjoyed outdoor activities including camping, boating, water skiing, hiking and golf.  He even scored a hole in won at the Davis Community golf course. Bob and his wife enjoyed traveling.  They visited Alaska, Hawaii and drove across the USA several times, probably seeing all 50 states.  They also did some foreign travel.  He enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Bob is survived by his three children, Charles L. Haight and his wife Diane of Lompoc, CA, Kerry L. Crow of McKinleyville, CA, Alta L. Paronto and her husband Richard of Odenton, MD; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by this wife in 2011.

A Celebration of Life graveside service will be Thursday, February 28 at 1:00 pm at the Davis Cemetery.
