Raymond Keefer, Jr

October 5, 1943 — March 28, 2008

Raymond was born in a naval hospital in Norfork, Virginia on October 5, 1943. After World War II his parents, Ray and Hilda Keefer, returned with him to the Davis he loved where he lived the rest of his life.

He graduated from Davis High School in 1962 and attended Sacramento Community College. He enjoyed photography, was honored for his square dancing, loved sea food, The Price is Right and the Sacramento Kings. He was very sociable and was devoted to family and his many friends.

Raymond was a groundskeeper for the Davis schools for 20 years until developing a spinal tumor with progressive paralysis confining him to a wheelchair in 1987. He was an active member of the Yolano Chapter of Californians for Disability Rights and became a familiar face at the City Planners office alerting them to locations where curb cuts and adjustment of the height of pedestrian walk signals were needed for handicap access, as well as handicap access to public places.

Raymond took a great interest in his family, friends and his neighbors at Rancho Yolo. He had a kind word for everyone and always maintained a positive outlook despite his lifelong health problems. He wheeled himself all over town visiting along the way. He was a familiar face at the Farmers Market, Picnic Day and the 4th of July parade.

He is survived by his parents, Ray and Hilda Keefer, his sister, Katherine Keefer, his brother, Jim Keefer (Kathie), nephews Aaron Whitney (Sarah), Eli Whitney (Cathy), and Chris Keefer, and nieces Lori Smith and Karen Keefer. He also leaves behind three great nieces and one great nephew.

His family would like to thank the many organizations and people who looked out for him, in particular, the residents of Rancho Yolo where he lived for 30 years, the Davis Fire Department, the Davis Community Transit, the Senior Center and the staff at Sierra Health Care Center (where he always looked forward to the bingo games).

A service will be held for him on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Davis Cemetery. Donations may be made in his name to theYolano Chapter Californians for Disability Inc. c/o George Miller, treasurer, 1610 Sycamore Lane, Davis, CA 95616.
