Peter Ludwig Schrag

1931 — March 19, 2026

Peter Ludwig Schrag, a distinguished journalist, author, and longtime editorial voice in California, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at Sutter Davis Hospital. He was 94. He was surrounded by close family and friends.

Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1931, Peter came to the United States as a child refugee fleeing Nazi persecution—a formative experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to democracy, civil rights, and the role of a free press. He graduated from Amherst College in 1953 and went on to build a remarkable career in journalism.

Schrag served for 19 years as editorial page editor of The Sacramento Bee, where his writing helped shape public discourse in California and beyond. He also served as executive editor of Saturday Review and contributed to publications including The Atlantic, Harper’s, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Nation. His book Paradise Lost: California’s Experience, America’s Future (1998) was named a New York Times Notable Book and remains one of the most influential examinations of California’s political and social trajectory.

Over a prolific career, Schrag authored numerous books exploring immigration, education, and American identity, including Voices in the Classroom, Not Fit for Our Society: Immigration and Nativism in America (2010), When Europe Was a Prison Camp (2015, with his father Otto Schrag), and California Fights Back (2018). His 1998 book Paradise Lost: California’s Experience, America’s Future was named a New York Times Notable Book. His writing consistently reflected a deep concern for equity, democratic values, and the lived experiences of immigrants and students.

A Guggenheim Fellow, he also taught at Amherst College and the University of California, Berkeley. Peter Schrag is remembered for his intellectual rigor, moral clarity, and deep belief in the promise of American democracy. He brought both a journalist’s skepticism and a refugee’s gratitude to his work, always striving to understand and improve the society he had come to call his own.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ternehan, and his children, Mitzi, Erin, David, Ben, and Sky.

Plans for a memorial service are underway and will be shared at a later date.
