John Kammerer

February 23, 1921 — October 25, 2007

John J. Kammerer passed away on October 25, 2007 at his home, surrounded by his family, after a long illness. Born on February 23, 1921 in New York City, he was a 54 year resident of Winters. John attended New York University for two years before his education was interrupted to serve in the US Army during World War II. He settled in California after the war and completed his education at California State University, San Francisco.

In 1955 John accepted a position at Winters High School where he taught for 32 years. During his tenure, in addition to teaching, John passionately coached nearly all sports that were offered at Winters High School and served as Athletic Director. It was during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Marian.

John was a dedicated and popular member of the Winters community who positively touched the lives of many of its youth. For many years he served as the Citys Summer Recreation Programs Coordinator and Little League Coordinator. John was a member of the Winters City Council and Vice Mayor. He was honored as the Winters Youth Day Grand Marshall in 1978 and 1988, SVAL Coach of the Year in 1973 and received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Athletics in 1980 from the State of California Athletic Association. Although sports were his passion in life, John loved spending time with his family, especially in his later years with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. During his retirement years, John traveled extensively with his wife Marian, together they toured most of North America with several trips to Europe.

John is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Marian and further survived by children John J. Kammerer III, Andrea McIlvaine and husband Larry, Ellen Pedroia and husband Kirby, John Carbahal and wife Debbie, Edward Carbahal and wife Sheila, Manny Carbahal and wife Debbie, He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Rudolph, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Barbara Kammerer and sister Lillian Collins.

John always felt fortunate to have a wonderful wife, family and friends and would like everyone to join in the celebration of his life.

Vigil Services will be held at Saint Anthonys Parish, 511 Main Street, Winters at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 29, 2007. Funeral Services will be held at the same location at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 30, 2007, burial to follow at Winters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions to be made to Yolo Hospice or the American Heart Association.
