Ivan Gilbert Sanchez, age 96, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to family, service to country, and a life filled with travel, music, and simple joys.
Ivan was born on September 25, 1929, in Ciales, Puerto Rico, to Quentin and Palmyra Sanchez. He would later joke that his education came from the “School of Hard Knocks,” a phrase that reflected both his humor and his resilient spirit.
He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps, which later became the United States Air Force, and carried a lifelong love of aviation thereafter. Following his military service, Ivan built a career with Trans World Airlines at San Francisco International Airport, where he worked as a Lead Ramp Supervisor and was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Ivan lived in San Mateo in the Bay Area before moving in 1998 to Woodland, where he resided for the past 28 years and became a familiar and beloved member of the community.
He had many passions that brought him joy throughout his life. Ivan loved thoroughbred horse racing and was a frequent patron of Bay Meadows Racetrack and Golden Gate Fields. He enjoyed listening to big band music of the 1930s and 1940s, especially the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and every Saturday night he faithfully watched The Lawrence Welk Show, often remarking, “they don’t make music like that anymore.”
Ivan loved to travel the world, take long drives, and completed several cross-country road trips. After settling in Woodland, he especially enjoyed scenic drives through the countryside to Cache Creek Casino Resort, where he became a regular. He loved playing Blackjack, had a knack for winning streaks on his favorite slot machines, enjoyed going out for Chinese food, and never met a donut he didn’t like.
Ivan was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary; his parents, Quentin and Palmyra Sanchez; and his son, Ivan. He is survived by his daughters Kimberly, Gwendolyn, and Charmaine; his brother Archimedes “Archie” Sanchez; three grandchildren, including Stephen, whom he adored and considered a son; and his great-grandchildren Emiliano, Emma, Lorenzo, and Alonzo.
Ivan will be remembered for his humor, his dedication to family, his love of music and adventure, and the warmth he brought to those who knew him. His life was long, well lived, and deeply cherished.
A time of visitation will be held Wednesday, February 18th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home (116 D Street, Davis, CA). A private family committal service will take place at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, California.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 528, Woodland, CA 95776-0528.
