Harry Low

July 16, 1922 — April 21, 2018

Harry Low, 95, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2018, at Palm Gardens Senior Living in Woodland, CA. Born July 16, 1922, in Sacramento, CA, Harry was the son of Chinese immigrants Low Keung and Soo Hoo Shee. Harry grew up north of Woodland on the Bemmerly Ranch. Here he learned the skills of blacksmithing, surveying, and leather work.

Harry briefly attended Cal Berkeley while working at night at the Kaiser Shipyard in Richmond as a welder and machinist. He worked there during the building of the liberty ships. After his marriage to Jane Gee in 1950, he settled in Davis. There Harry worked as a medical technician and a photographer. In the late 1950s, Harry was the official photographer for the Davis Enterprise. For many years Harry was the photographer for the Old Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee which began in 1974.

From 1963 to his retirement in 1983, Harry worked as the principal electron microscopist at Sutter Hospital in Sacramento. In the beginning of his career at Sutter, the electron microscope was so new that it had no established use in the medical field. Harry developed new equipment and worked with doctors to make the scope an integral tool of the pathology department. As an expert in the field he taught microscope classes at American River College, Sacramento, for many years. After his retirement, Harry began a business of repairing and maintaining microscopes in northern and central California.

In their leisure time Harry and Jane enjoyed several trips to the South Pacific and Asia. When back in Davis, Harry took pleasure in working on many home improvement projects.

Harry loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called him Papa. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jane; children Monty Low (Carol) and Andy Low; grandchildren Christina Maldonado (Edgar), Joanne Liebert, Elizabeth Low (Greg Kumparak), Thomas Low (Rachelle Robinson); and great-grandchildren Destanee, Jasmine and Chloe.
