Dolores Chakerian

October 5, 1930 — July 24, 2016

Dolores Marianne Chakerian of Davis passed away at age 85 on the morning of Sunday, July 24, 2016, as a consequence of complications from a stroke suffered last March.

Dolores was born Oct. 5, 1930, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the oldest of three daughters of Abram and Martha Ediger. She earned college degrees from Fresno Pacific University and Tabor College, and completed work for a teaching credential at Fresno State College. She began her career teaching elementary school in Shawnee, Kansas, and later in Kingsburg, CA.

Dolores met her future husband Donald Chakerian when they both worked at Noroian's Cannery in Dinuba earning summer income. They married on Aug. 22, 1958, in Dinuba. Dolores accompanied Donald to UC Berkeley where he pursued a Ph.D. in Mathematics, while Dolores continued teaching in the Oakland School District. After Donald obtained his degree, they spent three years in Pasadena, CA., and then moved to Davis in 1963, where she later served as a teacher's aide at Pioneer Elementary School.

Dolores had a deep love of God and His creation. She loved flowers and knew the scientific names of all the plants in her garden. She had a passion for gardening inherited from both her grandmothers, and a particular fondness for irises. She also loved classical music and was a strong supporter of the Mondavi Center at UCD. Dolores herself studied classical piano performance in her youth and was an accomplished musician with a beautiful singing voice. She also was a skilled cook and baked delectable apple pies and cheesecake, and she prepared a remarkable lobster bisque for holidays. She enjoyed preparing meals for families in need through her church.

Among other activities, Dolores enjoyed spending summers at their cabin in Mount Hermon, attending conferences and meeting new people from many walks of life. She took great pleasure in reading and was for many years a member of the Math Wives Book Club in Davis. She served for a time in the Sutter Hospital Auxiliary.

Dolores had a generous heart and contributed to a variety of charitable organizations, such as St. Judes Children's Hospital.

Dolores loved and appreciated her family so much; she is survived by her husband Donald, their children Denise Chakerian and Don Chakerian, and her sister Lois Brittell, two nieces and their families, as well as Donald's brother Michael and his wife Lisa. Those preceding her in death were her parents and an infant sister, Mabel.

Memorial donations in memory of Dolores may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital, www.stjude.org, or the Sutter Medical Foundation, www.suttermedicalfoundation.org.

A memorial service in her honor will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, Davis.
