Charles loved traveling, camping, gardening, photography, archery, mahjong, animals, and getting together with friends.

Charles (aka Chuck) died unexpectedly on August 16, 2026. He was born in Sacramento, California on May 29, 1950. He grew up in Davis and graduated from Davis High School. He served in the US Army Reserves and built a career as a cosmetologist, owning his own salon on Claremont Avenue in Oakland in the 1980s/1990s, working as an independent stylist, and retiring in 2014, after 12 years as a Cosmetology Instructor at Lytle’s Beauty College in Santa Rosa.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Nancy Kaufman, and beloved daughter Katie Kaufman; his sister Sally Thomsen and nephew Dennis Thomsen of Springdale, AR. He was proceeded in death by his parents Donald and Betty Kaufman.

Charles loved traveling, camping, gardening, photography, archery, mahjong, animals, and getting together with friends. Most of all he loved helping others and volunteering, especially at the Woodland Friends of the Library and for Yolo for Ukraine.

Charles will be greatly missed by all who knew him for his quiet manner, kindness, and generous spirit. As an organ donor, his generous spirit lives on.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wildlife Care Association (McClellan, CA) or Durham Humanitarian.org (dedicated to delivering lifesaving equipment and supplies to those in Ukraine affected by war).
