Ann Scoggins Meares, force of nature and beloved wife, mother, sister, friend and grandmother, passed away at home in Davis on June 8, 2026. She was born February 6, 1946 in Wilmington, North Carolina, to Irma and Dwight Scoggins. She was soon followed by brother Hank, with whom she shared a lifelong closeness. She married Claude Francis Meares in 1964, and had their first daughter, Lisa. Ann worked for an insurance company in North Carolina to support the family while Claude earned his BS from UNC, and she worked in the chemistry department at Stanford while Claude earned his PhD.
After arriving in Davis in 1972, Ann completed her bachelor’s degree from UC Davis in History in 1976. She had a second daughter Kathy and a son Chris. She worked as an office manager in a law firm and then as an administrator for the Bioconjugate Chemistry journal until her retirement in 2014.
Ann loved to entertain in her home for her family, sorority sisters, friends, Claude’s graduate students, and her book clubs. She was very popular at State and Nugget markets, as she enjoyed feeding others. Ann was generous, funny, and had an infectious laugh. She also enjoyed loving and spoiling her grandchildren.
For the past 10 years Ann experienced significant health problems, but with the loving support of Claude and Chris, she was able to live in her home and take outings to visit friends. She was of sound mind right to the end.
Ann will be missed by many but none more so than her family, who adored her. She is survived by her husband, Professor Emeritus Claude Meares; daughters Lisa (Randy), Kathy (Ray), son Chris, brother The Rev. Dr. Henry D. Scoggins, grandchildren Ruby and Hayes Wooliever, and Garrett Schrabeck. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local Meals on Wheels organization.
They say you can tell who went to heaven by the things people say about them. It’s easy to see that Ann is there.
A celebration of life will follow in the fall.
