On May 1, 2026 Davis lost a beloved life-long resident Alex Matta. (Also known as Eliseo). At 77 years old due to Cancer.
Alex loved all sports and could name the different players and coaches and their stats. Alex's #1 team was the UC Davis Aggies. Alex was the creator of the North End Zone at the old Toomey football Field back in the day. Alex was a big Aggie Booster and attended both football and basketball games. Alex was also a big supporter of the Sacramento Kings.
Alex had many life-long friends and was well known for party organizing. Lots of parties at various locations were all very well attended by his many, many friends.
Alex was preceded in death by his wife Muriel Suleiman, his parents Alex Sr., and Irene, and step-mother Muriel. Alex is survived by his close friend Elsa Miller, brother David and wife Lynn, his cousin Danny Ramirez, step-children Janine Zumwalt and granddaughter Summer, great grandchildren Cade and Lucy. Bret Zumwalt and grandchildren Kyle and Alisha, Sule Suleiman and wife Aubrey, and grandson Ash, Ibrahim Suleiman and grandson Leo. Also, brother in law Ray Griffith, his children Claire, her children David, Susan,and Tresa. His son Chris and his daughter Cheriene.
Alex's first job was in high school, at Star Pharmacy, then at Aggie Fan Club, and finished his career at UC Davis Bookstore. He made many life-long friends while going to school and working in Davis.
Alex's services are: Rosary Tuesday August 25, 2026 at St. James Church at 6:00pm. Memorial Mass at St. James Church, Wednesday August 26, 2026 at 11:30am. A Celebration of life will follow at the Veterans Memorial building across the street from the church.
Alex will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. His family extends a sincere thank you to all of the friends and extended family who visited Alex at Sutter Hospital and at the Joshua's Hospice house.
