Agnes Metz

December 11, 1917 — August 23, 2007

Agnes Pauline Pat Metz, 89, died peacefully at home on August 23, 2007, surrounded by her family. She was 89. Her parents were Elizabeth Mullen of Ireland and Albert Ebhardt of Germany. Pat was born December 11, 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Richmond Hill High School. Although she moved to Davis in 1966, Pat never lost her accent.

Pat married Charlie Metz on August 23, 1947. She was a homemaker all her life. Pat also held a variety of jobs, her favorite being at the soda fountain in Woolworths Five and Dime Store. She was proudest of her employment at Sperrys War Plant, making gyroscopes and running an engine lathe during WWII. She also broke the mold of women in 1955 by birthing her daughter using natural childbirth techniques taught by the Visiting Nurses Association of New York. Pat continued the heresy by joining La Leche League and breast feeding her daughter. She also worked for the Davis School District in the kitchens of Emerson Jr. High and Davis Senior High, retiring in 1982. Pat then spent many years helping St. James run its Bingo Night.

Pat was always keenly interested in world events and politics, and was a member of the Davis Democratic Club. She voiced her opinions early on, starting in 1928, by writing Al Smith for President in chalk on the sidewalks of her neighborhood. In later years, Pat usually wore a button of some kind, proclaiming her political or socio-religious views.

Above all else, Pat loved humankind, especially children. She felt the travails of others as if they were her own. Pats heroines were Dorothy Day of the Catholic Worker movement and Mother Teresa. Her enduring gifts to her family were expressing her love by cooking good meals and showing how to live a low-consumption lifestyle. Pat always walked to do her errands, always hung her laundry on a clothesline to dry and lived without air conditioning until age 85.

Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie and her two brothers, Al and Frank.

Pat is survived by her daughter, Maura Metz, son-in-law Rod Macdonald; grandsons: Lucas, Kevin and Jacob Macdonald; sister-in-law, Lillian Carter; nephew, Andy Lang and family all of Davis; sister-in-law, Nancy Ebhardt and niece, Nancy Beder and family of Long Island as well as numerous god-children on both coasts.

A Memorial Mass will take place Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. at St. James Catholic church in Davis. A reception will follow at the Churchs Memorial Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Pats memory to any organization that works for peace and justice, or group that feeds the poor.
