Virginia Gaylord

August 23, 1919 — February 11, 2014

Virginia M. Gaylord, from Sacramento, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014. She was born August 23, 1919 in Greenville, Michigan to the late Edwin and Bessie Butts. She grew up with her only sibling the late Herschell Butts. She loved music and dance. As a small girl, she would travel to different towns in Michigan to perform the Charleston. After high school graduation in 1937, she moved only a block away from her parents after marrying John S. Clark. John and Virginia had two boys, Johnny and Jerry, who they delighted in watching, "The Clark Boys", football together for Greenville High School. Virginia worked at Gibson Refrigerator Company for 25 years. During WWII the manufacturing plant was converted into making Gliders. Virginia was responsible for installing the electronic panels on the planes. After the war John returned from deployment, and they had a daughter, Judie. John and Virginia also helped Virginia's mother, Bessie, run her restaurant, "The Glider" for 10 years. In 1962 Virginia with her husband and daughter, moved to Auburn, Washington where she worked at Boeing Aircraft in a classified position for the minute man missile department. In 1971, she and John moved to Lansing, Michigan after John landed a job as computer analyst for the state treasury dept. Virginia moved to Davis, Ca. in 1977 after her husband passed away, to live close to her son Jerry and family. She then worked as a secretary for UCD in the dean's office. On Valentine's Day 1981, she found love again and married the late Edison Gaylord moving to Sacramento where she resided until her death. She and Edison both retired traveled around the country visiting their children and families. They enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Lake Tahoe. Virginia spent most of her time tending to her animals and roses. Virginia and Edison enjoyed ballroom dancing, singing, and playing music together. Virginia is survived by three children: John Clark and his wife, Barbara, of Alexandria, Louisiana: Judie Fohs of Idaho Falls, Idaho: Stepson, Larry Gaylord and his wife, Donna in North Carolina Jerry Clark, passed away in 1998 where his widow, Viv-ette resides in Davis, Ca. She also is survived by eight grandchildren. 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to The American Cancer Society. The service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 14th at Wiscombe Funeral Home, 116 D Street, Davis. Virginia will be buried at Davis Cemetery, next to her late husband Edison and son Jerry.
