Thomas Venard

Thomas William Venard passed away surrounded by his loving family on December 15, 2010, succumbing to complications due to pneumonia.
Born December 28, 1924 in Ness City, Kansas, he was 85 years old.
Tom grew up in Chehalis, Washington and enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 where he became a member of Battery D of the 800th Artillery. He soon saw action in the South Pacific.
In 1945 while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Tom reenlisted as an officer. He was sent to Fort Ords language school where he became fluent in both Japanese and German. He was then recruited into Army Intelligence and transferred to West Germany to spy on the East Germans. During one of his missions, he met the love of his life, Elisabeth Kohler, and married her in 1955.
The couple returned to the States and settled in Vacaville, California to raise their family. In 1963 after over twenty years of military service, Tom retired from the army and began his second career as a nuclear inspector of submarines for the United States Navy. In 1986 he retired after 43 years of military and civilian work.
After retiring, Tom and his wife moved to Yuba City where he was active in the American Legion. He also was a regular at his grandchildrens many athletic events.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elisabeth; his brother, John Newton Venard and his wife Clista; and his parents, John N. and Nancy Blanche Venard.
Tom is survived by his four children, Thomas J. Venard of Kansas City, Mo.; William N. Venard of Vacaville, California; Blanche Venard McNaughton and her husband, Davis Enterprise Publisher R. Burt McNaughton of El Macero; and Barbara Anne Venard, RN at Catholic Healthcare West.
He is further survived by 9 grandchildren including Jacquelyn McNaughton Buley and her husband Taylor Buley of San Francisco, Berkeley Elizabeth McNaughton of El Macero, and Joshua Venard of Vacaville.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 am on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Wiscombes Funeral Home in Davis, followed my a military committal at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on Midway Road Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the American Legion or the Wreath Project http:/wreathproject.org.
