Paul Edwin Martin died on his 84th birthday in San Clemente, CA surrounded by family on November, 18 2008.

On Monday, November 24, visitation will be at Wiscombes Davis Funeral Chapel at 116 D St. The funeral service begins at 1:30 p.m. at Davis Community Church at 412 C St. Interment will follow at Davis Cemetery.

He was born in Owosso, Michigan on November 18, 1924 to George Rhinus Martin and Amy Lorene Martin. His senior year of high school was completed in Pasadena, CA where he graduated in 1943. That same year he joined the Navy. He completed Radio Operator School at Northwestern University followed by Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. He then served during World War II in the Pacific Ocean with assignments to the submarine USS Bass in 1944 and to USS Trutta in 1945.

Paul attended University of Arizona at Tucson and received a Bachelor of Science in Soils & Plant Nutrition in 1953, then a Masters Degree in 1954. While at University of Arizona, he met his future wife, Ruth Lawson, from Chicago, Illinois. He married Ruth on June 7, 1952 in Tucson, Arizona.

Paul worked as a Farm Advisor in Riverside County in 1955 and 1956. Their oldest daughter, Julie, was born there. He moved his family to Davis, California in 1956 to accept a position in the Soils Dept. at Univ. of CA-Davis. While living in Davis, he and his wife completed their family with three additional children born, Janet, Donna and Matthew. He also worked for the Irrigation Dept. and eventually these departments combined to form Land, Air & Water Resources where Paul was a Staff Research Associate. Paul retired in 1990, after 34 years of employment for the Univ. of CA. In 2005 Paul and Ruth moved to San Clemente, to live closer to family.

Paul loved being outdoors and enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his family. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one son. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth, of San Clemente, daughter Julie and her husband Dale of St. Louis, MO; daughter Janet and her husband Chuck of San Clemente; daughter Donna and her husband Randy of Chatsworth, CA; grandchildren: Amy, Nicole, Rachel, Cara, Andrea, Stewart, Daniel and Lauren; and many nieces and nephews.
