Matthew Laplante

Matthew Theron LaPlante passed away at home in Vacaville on Jan. 22, 2018.  He was 17 years old. Born June 16, 2000 at David Grant Medical Center in Fairfield, Matthew was the second born of triplets.

Matthew was a gentle, loving child whose constant smile could and did light the darkest of places. He faced many challenges in his much too short life, and had every right to be an angry, bitter child. Instead, he faced his challenges with grace and determination that was and will always be an inspiration for those who loved him.  He will be missed greatly.

Matthew is survived by his mother, Jennifer Nitzkowski, and stepfather, Richard Nitzkowski; father, Robert LaPlante and his fiancée Alicia Campos; sister, Megan LaPlante, and brother, Joshua LaPlante; stepsister, Melissa Nitzkowski, and stepbrother, Justin Nitzkowski. He is also survived by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him dearly. He was especially fond of his Papa Theron Foote, who spent numerous hours by his bedside during an extended hospital stay last year, and Rendi Baker, who served as his daycare provider for more than seven years.

A service was held for Matthew on Jan. 26 at Smith Funeral Home in Davis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Epilepsy Foundation or to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

Thanks so much my Midwest family. We know that you have all endured more than your share of loss and wish we could have been there for you. Your love and prayers are welcomed and appreciated and we are thankful to have family like you. Miss and love you all. And for the Viking fans in the family (Paula I know) sorry for your loss as well (trying to add levity here) hope the packers fans in the family did not give you too bad a time. Love and miss you all.

Thanks so much for sharing how you feel about Matthew. You all had a huge impact on his life and continue to have in the other two. He never wanted to miss school. He loved it so. Thank you so much for all you did for him and continue to do for our family. You are truly appreciated. It takes a special person to what all of you in the classroom do. That has always amazed me and we will be forever grateful.

My best bud: there are no words that can express the emptiness in my heart right now. I know that you are in a better place, a place without pain and suffering. For that I am grateful. But to not see your smiling face when I walk through the door I am harshly reminded how gods plan is not always whats easiest or whats fair. I miss you my best bud with all my heart and soul. Though the multitude of family and friends that cared for you are here for us and have helped so much have helped to ease the pain, we still miss you every second, every minute every day. You were my buddy, my hero and my inspiration and I hope you knew every day how much I truly loved you. You had such a huge impact on my life. When I thought I had a bad day and was feeling grumpy all I had to do was glance at you. Whether it was during your 98 day stay at the hospital, making the climb up the stairs when you didnt have the energy or sat calmly in the beach wheel chair wondering what was taking the old guy pushing you up the hill was taking so long, you always had the smile that lit up the world on your face. You had every right to be an angry child but you chose to be happy despite the unfair burdens placed on you. I will miss out bedtime music games, our common love of bodily function noises, I will even miss blues clues and Sesame Street but most of all I will miss you and your smile that would light up any room. For your smile, your love and the time we spent with you your mom and I will always be thankful. You live on in our hearts, our memories and as an irreplaceable part of our family. And as hard as it will be we will try our best to face this challenge in the way you would so we can carry on that beautiful smile until we see you again. Thank you for everything you gave us during your way too short stay in this place. We love and miss you more than words can say. You live on in our hearts and memories forever. Rip my best bud.
