John Mureness

John Howard Mureness passed away on June 21, 2012 in Davis, California, at the age of 71 years after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on June 20, 1941 in Little Falls, New York and grew up in Fort Plain, New York, graduating from Fort Plain High School in 1959. He joined the Army shortly afterwards and trained as a combat medic, serving in both Vietnam and Thailand. He also attended the State University of New York at Albany. Upon leaving the military, he worked as a registered nurse in the California Bay Area. John was an avid contract bridge player and won several regional tournaments around the country during the 1980s. He also was an excellent billiards player and bowler. His other hobbies included reading, military history, crossword puzzles, and golf. John is survived by his three children, William, Rima, and Thomas, and five grandchildren: Brianna, Hazel, Christian, Nicholas, and Kaylah. He also remained close to his ex-wife Kim. He was pre-deceased by both parents, Howard Mureness and Doris Oeser. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for John on Thursday, July 5 at 11:00 am at Wiscombe Funeral Home, 116 D Street, Davis, CA, phone 530-758-5500. The burial will take place following the service at 12:30 pm at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA, phone 707-693-2460.

I would like to extend my sympathies to Jacks family. I grew up with him and would have liked to see him one more time. As his only full brother I will miss him.

John was my half-brother and even though we didn't know each other, I wanted his family to know we were sorry to read of his death in our Fort Plain paper.

My condolences to John's family. I have fond memories of conversarions with John at Fort Plain High School and at SUNY Albany.
