Elmo Candelo

After a short decline due to cancer, Elmo Candelo died, May 8, 2007, in the peace and comfort of his home, with his family.
He was born in Rust, California (El Cerrito) to Antonietta and Giovanni Candelo. He was raised in San Franciscos North Beach area, and graduated from Galileo High School. He moved to Davis in 1936 to work as a carpenter, and lived with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Giovanni Barovetto. Elmo worked as a carpenter helping to build many of the homes in College Park, and on Oak Avenue. In 1939 he married Eleanor Calori, a Davis native. After serving with the occupation forces in Japan at the end of WWII, he returned to Davis and went to work for the carpenter shop at the UC Davis physical plant. He spent the next 28 years there and retired in 1973.
He loved his family. Being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather were most important to him. He loved taking the family to Dillons Beach to go crabbing and clamming. He was active with his sons in Boy Scout troop 669. He served as quarter master for VFW Post 6949 for over 25 years and helped with the annual poppy sales. Elmo gave to the City of Davis and to its Veterans - flags. He was instrumental in organizing and coordinating the placing of American Flags on each veterans grave on Memorial Day. Enjoying bowling in Davis and Bocce ball in Fairfield, he and his wife, Eleanor, won many trophies and medals at both sports. They participated in the Senior Olympics and took silver, bronze and gold medals in Bocce Ball. Elmo loved Bocce Ball and he played to win. Playing his last games in March, he won 2 out of 3 games. Elmo was an avid 49er and Giants fan, not wanting to miss a game, no matter where he was. He and Eleanor loved to travel, on their own to Italy, Japan, and every Aviation Museum in the U.S., and on senior trips, where ever they went.
Elmo was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor. He is survived by his 3 children and their spouses, John Candelo, wife Sharon, of Napa, Leo Candelo, wife Nancy, of Davis, and daughter Shirley Watkins, husband John, of Fairfield; 6 grandchildren, Lisa Candelo, Wendy Candelo Zane, husband Brian, J. David Candelo, wife Jennifer, Robyn Craighead, husband Dave, Jennifer Tomson, husband Mike, and Juli Watkins and 5 great grandchildren; Nicole & Kyle Zane, Howie & Lacey Tomson, and Marie Candelo.
Viewing will be at Wiscocmbes Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D Street, Davis, Sunday, May 13th starting at 6:00 p.m. The rosary service will begin at 7:00p.m. The funeral will be at St. James Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday May 14th. Memorial contributions may be sent to Yolo Hospice.
