Elizabeth Weir

Elizabeth R. Weir has passed from this life at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2015.

She was born in Madison, Wis. to Miles C. and Katherine G. Riley on Aug. 9, 1915. She had three brothers, all who have preceded her. She was raised a good Irish Catholic girl in a loving family. She was married to her longtime loving husband William C. Weir, a decorated World War II veteran, in December of 1946 and eventually moved to Davis

Her father was a lawyer who ran for and held many political positions throughout her life so it is no surprise how involved she was in Davis politics. She was a stalwart of the Democratic Party since her teenage years in Madison and continued here in Davis and Yolo County. She helped found the Davis Democratic Club and the Davis Women's Democratic Club, and served on the Yolo County Democratic Central Committee.

She has been known as Mrs. Democrat for many years and has helped many politicians, at many levels, from city offices to the president of the United States. While politics was one of her main interests she also helped establish STEAC an emergency charity in the Davis area. She has always taken in strays and helped homeless people on the streets and this writer remembers hearing from my father Bill, "Mother what are you feeding in the garage now?"

She and her husband Bill have also traveled the world for his job a UCD. A year living in Perth, Australia, two years living in Santiago, Chile, and during his final years at UCD there were travels to Peru, Nigeria, the Philippines and Borneo. Even while out of the country she found a way to help those less fortunate than her. In Santiago she became known as the SeAora because of her efforts to provide shoes for the poor children in the barrio next to their apartment building. All in all, Betty Weir has lived an extremely full life here and around the world.

She is survived by sons Robert of Santa Maria and Timothy of Sacramento; grandson David and great-granddaughter Jaden Weir of Sacramento; sister-in-law Honor Riley of Green Bay, Wis.; Kathy Gargano of Wisconsin; Tom Riley and Kitty Anderson of Wisconsin; Patty Riley of Chicago; Mike, Steve, Sean and Trish of Madison; Billie Riley of Arizona; and Colleen and Debby in Green Bay, Wis.

All her family and her friends will be sad at her passing but the pain will finally be gone and there needs to be celebration of a life lived long and well.

The open-casket viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Smith Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be, Friday, August 21, 2015 at 11:00 A.M., at St. James Catholic Church. The celebration of life will be at St. James following the funeral
