Edwin Alonzo Hendrix, a California native, Ed was born in Sacramento and grew up in Live Oak. He was an Eagle Scout and attended the 1963 Boy Scout International Jamboree in Greece. He first moved to Davis to attend UC Davis, where he graduated in 1968 with double majors in History and International Relations, as well as met Kathleen Montgomery, who he married in 1969. After five years in the Air Force, he attended UC Davis Law School, graduating in 1976. He went on to work for the State of California Department of Social Services, first as a hearing officer and later as an administrative law judge, until his retirement in 2007.
Ed was a kind, gentle man who loved his family. An active member of St. James Parish, his interest in justice extended beyond his work for the state and informed his participation in a number of non-profit organizations, including Friends of Rutilio Grande, which formed to strengthen connections with Davis’s sister city in El Salvador and Legal Aid of Northern California. After retirement, he volunteered for Yolo Hospice, where he brought his talent for attentive listening to the broader community.
In his free time, Ed enjoyed playing and listening to folk music and bluegrass. With his family he hiked and camped across much of the West Coast, as well as traveling further afield, especially enjoying a Baltic cruise with Kathleen and accompanying his son Julian on research trips in Germany and Switzerland.
Ed passed away after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Kathleen, his children Nathan (Elizabeth), Andrew (Katie), and Julian, grandchildren Evelyn and Logan and his sister Lynette. Memorial services were private. Donations in his memory may be made to Legal Aid of Northern California.
