Edith E. Silva passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Edie was a devoted wife, loving mom, wonderful grandma, sister and aunt, and a caring dedicated friend. Edie, with her infectious smile, warmth and big brown eyes, always demonstrated her profound love for family and friends. With her giving kind nature, she continually put all others before herself.
Edie was born in Sacramento on March 17, 1928, to Darrel P. & Elspet Bruce White McMurtry. She spent her almost her entire life in Davis, attending Central Davis Elementary School, Emerson Junior High, Davis Senior High School and Sacramento City College.
She met her husband of almost 59 years, Milton Gilbert Silva, in 1948 while he was a student at UC Davis. After a year's courtship, Milt proposed to Edie on her 21st birthday and they were married on Nov. 12, 1949, at St. James Catholic Church. They spent a brief time in Los Molinas while Milt taught high school, but returned back to Davis where they made a special loving home for these past 58 years.
Edie began her career as the secretary for Davis Senior High School, was an accountant for McNeil's Flooring for many years, and before her retirement, served for 25 years as the executive assistant to three UC Davis chancellors, Emil Mrak, James Meyer and Ted Hullar.
With boundless energy and endless love of family and friends, she provided a loving, supportive home where she graciously welcomed others. Edie always made time to make everyone feel special. Her family and friends meant the world to her. She was extremely loyal and dedicated, demanding excellence of herself in all that she did in work and in life.
She was volunteered at work, schools, community and organizations, as well as took on lead roles for numerous activities/projects such as the Yolo Hospice's Jazz in the Park and its Thrift Shop. She was also an active member of the UC Davis Retirees Association and helped produce its newsletter.
As a caring, compassionate soul, she was always coming to the assistance of those in need while careful to maintain a low profile. Her efforts were always from her heart and the desire to give and she truly lived by the mottos 'it is always better to give than to receive' and 'put others before yourself.' She will be remembered for her love, welcoming smile, kindness, intelligence, graciousness, generosity, dedication and profound loyalty.
In addition to her loving, devoted husband, Edie is survived by her daughter Darlene Hunter (Craig); son Stan Silva (Lorri); four grandchildren, Cristlyn Hunter Stephens (Jeff), Shelby Hunter, Ashley Silva and Matthew Silva; sister, Isabella Hermann (Wally); brother, Darrel McMurtry (Susan); nephews, Carl, Ken and Craig (Deb) Hermann, Gregory (Mary), Randall (Jeanne) and Jim (Pam)Silva, and Sherman McMurtry; nieces, Jeannette LeMar (Eric), Tiffany McMurtry, Sharon Silva Trap, Karen Silva, Kathy Silva Schrumpert (Bill), and Kristy Silva Felts (Kevin); numerous grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as many special dear friends who gave her great joy, happiness and fulfillment.
The family extends a special thank you to all the dear friends who have shared their lives with Edie and our family. We especially thank you for providing outstanding support and love during her illness. Our family also greatly appreciates the excellent care, kindness and support of Dr. Michelle Kim, Dr. Bellinger, Dr. Kile, Dr. Shihabi, Dr. Wang, Dr. Westin, Sutter Davis Hospital's ER & ICU staff, AMR-American Medical Response team, Davis Fire Department -Lake Boulevard team and Yolo Hospice team.
In compliance with Edie's wishes and unassuming ways, a private family service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to be made in Edie's memory to continue her giving ways to Yolo Hospice or your favorite charity.
