Charles Van Alstine

October 20, 1930 ~ February 5, 2018 (age 87)

Charles Van Alstine, 87, passed away on February 5, 2018, surrounded by his family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 20, 1930, he was raised in Butte, Montana. After serving in the Army Signal Corps, he graduated from Montana School of Mines. Following his marriage to E. Carol Miller, he attended U.C. Berkeley, obtaining a M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering. He enjoyed a long career with Taber Consultants before launching Wallace-Kuhl & Associates in 1984 with his partners. For 25 years, he and his family lived in Davis, California. Both he and Carol were active in the Catholic Newman Center, loved ballroom dancing, and traveled around the world. When they retired to Kelseyville, California, their beautiful home overlooking Clear Lake was the site of many family gatherings.

His life revolved around his large family, many of whom he inspired to think beyond themselves and to take action on their beliefs. Affectionately called Grumpee, he will be sadly missed for his kindness, his generosity, and his wit. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol, children Alice Van Alstine, Lois (Don) Hall, Mary (Dan) Garrett, and David (Marcia) Van Alstine; grandchildren, Sheri Hein, Amanda (Scott) Lord, Jessica Hein, Katie Hall, Lauren and Aaron Van Alstine; great-grandchildren Jason and Matthew; siblings John (Laura), William (Toni) and Kathy (Rich) Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents Roz and Charles, his brother Phil, and his grandson Joseph.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yolo Hospice, 1909 Galileo Ct., Davis, CA 95618.
